Dal Makhani (Butter Dal)
Famous creamy butter dal recipe, great side dish and great as main course,
served with some bread.
Ingredients
- 1 tbsp kidney beans
- 1 cup urad dal (black lentils)
- 1/2 cup curd
- 1/2 cup cream
- 2 tbsp oil
- 1 tsp cumin seeds
- 1 onion, finely chopped
- 5 cloves garlic, chopped
- 2 1/2 cm ginger, groud to paste
- 2-3 green chilies, finely chopped
- 1 tomato, skinned and chopped
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder
- 1/2 tsp red chili powder
- 1/2 tsp coriander powder
- salt to taste
- 1/2 tsp garam masala
- 2 tbsp butter
- 1 tbsp coriander leaves
Preparation
- soak kidney beans over night
- cook the kidney beans and urad dal in lightly salted water until soft, remove
excess water, add curd and cream
- heat oil on a medium flame, add cumin seeds and cook until they begin to
splutter
- add onions, fry until golden brown
- lower flame, add garlic, ginger and green chilies, fry for another minute or
two
- add tomatoes, turmeric, red chili and coriander powder and salt, fry until
the tomatoes become mushy
- add dal, when it boils turn off flame
- add butter, coriander leaves and garam masala and serve
